What Materials Are Best Suited for Gravity Casting?

Aluminum Alloys

Aluminum remains the most widely used material in gravity casting, favored for its high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and cost efficiency. Alloys such as A356, ADC12, and 319 dominate industrial use:

  • A356: Heat treatable (T6) to ≥310 MPa tensile strength and ≥110 Brinell hardness. Common in automotive chassis parts, aerospace brackets, and energy system housings.

  • ADC12: Offers high fluidity, dimensional accuracy, and castability. Used extensively in consumer electronics enclosures and motor housings.

  • 319: Provides better thermal resistance and moderate strength, ideal for engine and transmission parts requiring 150–200 MPa tensile strength with good machinability.

Copper Alloys

Copper-based alloys offer exceptional thermal and electrical conductivity. Their durability and corrosion resistance make them well-suited for harsh environments, such as telecommunication systems and marine hardware.

  • Silicon Bronze (C87500): Balances strength (≥350 MPa) and corrosion resistance; suitable for plumbing and architectural hardware.

  • Red Brass (C83600): Exhibits excellent pressure-tightness and is widely used in pump and valve bodies.

Zinc Alloys

Zinc-based alloys like ZA-12 and ZA-27 are applied in medium-load, dimensionally stable parts. Although less common in gravity casting due to lower melting points (~380 °C), they’re cost-effective for high-wear components where tight tolerances are essential.

Magnesium Alloys (Limited Use)

Magnesium’s low density (1.74 g/cm³) offers significant weight savings for aerospace and EV markets. However, oxidation risks and higher safety requirements limit its use. Current research focuses on safer alloy formulations for broader adoption.
